UHCL’s College of Education STEP, Spring 2017 Kickoff

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Education held its Success Through Education Programs, or STEP, Spring 2017 Kickoff Luncheon in late January. STEP is a collaborative effort between UH-Clear Lake, five area school districts, and four community colleges designed to create opportunities for students to explore teaching as a profession and to prepare them to become certified teachers.

UHCL to host free, two-day Bilingual Counseling Conference

University of Houston-Clear Lake is hosting a free, two-day bilingual counseling conference, “Culturally Responsive Counseling with Latinx - Our Past, Our Present, Our Future,” Jan. 27-28 in the university’s Bayou Theater, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Among conference focus is to review the steps the psychology and counseling professions are taking toward the current state of mental health for Latinx, especially those faced with legal status issues.

UHCL College of Education celebrated its newest doctoral graduates

University of Houston-Clear Lake College of Education celebrated its newest Educational Leadership doctoral graduates during the university’s December commencement ceremonies. The graduating class included Joanie DeForest, winner of the National Associate of Developmental Educators Outstanding Dissertation Award, and Skyler Rossacci, the university’s youngest doctoral graduate at age 25.

UHCL prof to share best practices for young children with disabilities

University of Houston-Clear Lake Assistant Professor of Special Education Elizabeth Beavers will serve as the Texas “ambassador” to spearhead the dissemination of new recommended practices for the care and education of young children with disabilities. Beavers, who has worked in the field of early childhood special education for more than 25 years, was selected by the Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center to join a group of 16 experts forming a national cohort to disseminate information and provide training within their states.

Though the images of hundreds of kids clinging to the tops of trains rolling across the Mexican terrain have faded from our TV screens, the kids still arrive. The young, unaccompanied refugees fleeing poverty and crime in Central America arrive with little to call their own, though they are loaded with heavy baggage.

University of Houston-Clear Lake School of Education has been welcomed into partnership with the 100Kin10 coalition, which comprises more than 280 corporations, foundations, museums, non-profits, school districts and other universities committed to delivering 100,000 new science, technology, engineering and mathematics or STEM educators by 2021.
